Kilroy was here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilroy_was_here

Quote
Kilroy was here is an American popular culture expression, often seen in graffiti. Its origins are open to speculation, but recognition of it and the distinctive doodle of "Kilroy" peeking over a wall is known almost everywhere among U.S. residents who lived during World War II and through the Korean War.

Ötzi the Iceman

Quote
Ötzi the iceman (pronounced  [ˈœtsi] ), Similaun Man or Man from Hauslabjoch are modern names of a well-preserved natural mummy of a man who lived about 5300 years ago[1]. The mummy was found in September 1991 in the Schnalstal glacier in the Ötztal Alps, near Hauslabjoch on the border between Austria and Italy.[2] The nickname comes from Ötztal (Ötz valley), the region in which he was discovered. He is Europe's oldest natural human mummy, and has offered an unprecedented view of Chalcolithic (Copper Age) Europeans. The body and his belongings are displayed in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, northern Italy.

Human echolocation

Quote
Human echolocation is the ability of humans to sense objects in their environment by hearing echoes from those objects. This ability is used by some blind people to navigate within their environment. They actively create sounds, such as by tapping their canes, lightly stomping their foot or by making clicking noises with their mouths. Human echolocation is similar in principle to active sonar and to the animal echolocation employed by some animals, including bats and dolphins.

Tom Cruise Purple

Quote
Tom Cruise Purple is a strain of cannabis sold in California by select licensed cannabis clubs. The strain is potent, and is packaged with a picture of the actor Tom Cruise laughing. Cruise sought out legal advice regarding the product, and considered a lawsuit against its manufacturers.

Media commentators for The Toronto Star, Gawker, and the CNN program Showbiz Tonight analyzed the matter, and the product was the subject of a parody on a satirical website. American lawyer Lisa Bloom commented that it would not be prudent for Cruise to sue over the product, and public relations writer Howard Bragman stated it was not a good idea from a legal standpoint to utilize Cruise's image in such a fashion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Cruise_Purple

Quote
Marlene Arpe wrote in The Toronto Star, "A strain of weed called Tom Cruise Purple is being sold at California cannabis clubs. It makes you laugh hysterically while maintaining iron-fisted control of everyone around you." Ryan Tate of Gawker commented, "How high do you have to be to name a grade of medical marijuana after lawsuit-happy Scientologist Tom Cruise?" A parody site posted a satirical webpage about the product, with a recommended dosage, "Enough to make patients speak solely in unintelligible acronyms." CNN television host A.J. Hammer commented on the program Showbiz Tonight, "Also, you can now roll up Tom Cruise and smoke him. That's right. Marijuana is being sold called 'Tom Cruise Purple.' But you know, Tom's not laughing to be blunt. Will there be a joint investigation or is this just a token effort - you know, a half-baked idea?"

Novelty architecture

Quote
Novelty architecture is a type of architecture in which buildings and other structures are given unusual shapes as a novelty, such as advertising, notoriety as a landmark, or simple eccentricity of the owner or architect. Many examples of novelty architecture take the form of buildings that resemble the products sold inside to attract drive-by customers. Others are attractions all by themselves, such as giant animals, fruits, and vegetables, or replicas of famous buildings. And others are merely unusual shapes or made of unusual building materials.

Double duty today:

Venus figurines

Venus of Willendorf

Quote
Venus figurines is an umbrella term for a number of prehistoric statuettes of women portrayed with similar physical attributes from the Upper Palaeolithic, mostly found in Europe, but with finds as far east as Irkutsk Oblast, Siberia, extending their distribution to much of Eurasia, from the Pyrenees to Lake Baikal. Most of them date to the Gravettian period, but there are a number of early examples from the Aurignacian, including the Venus of Hohle Fels, discovered in 2008, carbon dated to at least 35,000 years ago, and late examples of the Magdalenian, such as the Venus of Monruz, aged about 11,000 years.

Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay

Quote
The Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay is a rhesus macaque monkey that has been on the loose and evading capture for approximately one year (as of March 2010) in St. Petersburg, Florida.[1] The monkey is thought to be a male that weighs 30 pounds.[2]

Authorities are not certain where the monkey came from. One possibility is that it could have been separated from a troupe of wild monkeys in Silver River State Park[3], approximately 103[4] miles north of St. Petersburg. Another possibility is that it could have escaped from an owner who does not have a permit and thus is not registered with authorities.[1]

A Facebook page for the monkey has been set up, which has more than 60,000 fans (as of March 31, 2010).[1] The monkey is shy and not considered a threat to humans.[5] Its repeated success at avoiding being captured has been compared to the TV series The Fugitive.[6] The monkey looks both ways to check for traffic before crossing the street.[1]

Talpiot Tomb

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talpiot_Tomb

Quote
The Talpiot Tomb (or Talpiyot Tomb) is a tomb discovered in 1980 in the East Talpiot neighborhood, five kilometers south of the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel. It contained ten ossuaries, six of them with epigraphs, including one with the inscription that has been interpreted as "Jesus, son of Joseph", though this text is disputed.[1] The tomb also yielded various human remains and several carvings.

London Bridge (Lake Havasu City)

Quote
London Bridge is a bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, USA, which is based on the 1831 London Bridge which spanned the River Thames in London, England until it was dismantled in 1967. The Arizona bridge is a reinforced concrete structure clad in the original masonry of the 1830s bridge, which was bought by Robert P. McCulloch from the City of London. McCulloch had exterior granite blocks from the original bridge numbered and transported to America, in order to construct the present bridge in Lake Havasu City, a planned community he established in 1964 on the shore of Lake Havasu. The bridge was completed in 1971 along with a canal, and links an island in the lake with the main part of Lake Havasu City.

Juana Maria

Quote
Juana Maria (died October 18, 1853), better known to history as "The Lone Woman of San Nicolas" (her Indian name is unknown), was a Native American woman who was the last surviving member of her tribe, the Nicoleño. She lived alone on San Nicolas Island from 1835 until her discovery in 1853. Scott O'Dell's popular children's novel Island of the Blue Dolphins was inspired by her story.

Antikythera mechanism

Quote
The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient mechanical computer designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was recovered in 1900–01 from the Antikythera wreck, but its complexity and significance were not understood until decades later. It is now thought to have been built about 150–100 BC. Technological artifacts of similar complexity did not reappear until the 14th century, when mechanical astronomical clocks appeared in Europe.

Goose pulling

Quote
Goose pulling (also called gander pulling, goose riding or pulling the goose) was a blood sport practiced in parts of the Netherlands, England and North America from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The sport involved fastening a live goose with a well-greased head to a rope or pole that was stretched across a road. A man riding on horseback at a full gallop would attempt to grab the bird by the neck in order to pull the head off.
